First time back on the train after the accident.....

Today was the first day Casey has taken the train in almost 2 years. In April of 2009, she was run over by a bus, while in a crosswalk with the light. She almost died, her left leg needed to be entirely rebuilt. She spent months in the hospital.

And now, stairs are nearly impossible for her. She's tough, but it's painful.

So she gets around the city by bus, which is long and frustrating. This winter, with its piles of snow, boarding the bus was sometimes impossible. And going downtown, something that could be done in just minutes on an express train, can take five times as long on the bus.

But the today, Casey found herself two hours from home on the bus, but a mere 30-40 minutes on the train. So at Delancey, she steeled herself and climbed down the stairs.

When we boarded, a lovely woman gave up her seat. I'm a ham, so I said thank you, this was Casey's first day on the train since she was hit by a bus almost two years ago. The people around us send up a large cheer. Casey smiled--big.

It's a wonderful thing to be a New Yorker, back on the subway.

Here she is, transferring to the 1 at 59th street.

Remembering a Smile on the Subway

My best subway story is about my first time ever on the train - I was 16 and from a small New England town. I was smiling at everyone because I was so happy to be in NYC for the first time. I smiled at a Middle Eastern dude on the platform, and he smiled back. Two nights later, I was leaving Times Square after the ball dropped. It was 2 or 3 in the morning, and I hopped in a cab. The driver says "I know you - we smiled at each other on the subway two days ago!" Funny, serendipitous New York moment...

The Dy-no-mite D!

Many years ago, rush-hour commuters from Brighton Beach to Manhattan were often treated to the pleasure of riding the "Dy-no-mite D," so named by its host: a chatty, friendly, funny conductor who used the intercom to interact with riders. At every station, he welcomed us aboard and provided a time check and weather update. He reminded folks to be courteous and give up their seats to any elderly people he saw boarding ("OK Car No 1. Somebody give a seat to that gentleman with the cane.). He admonished folks not to push, assuring us "there's room for everyone aboard the Dy-no-mite D," served as a tour guide of the neighborhoods we were passing through, and just generally made the morning commute a literal joy ride.

Jeesh, I miss him.

Valentine's Redux

Here's a great Valentine's Day note, posted at the start of the platform of a station in Brooklyn.

Incredibly romantic declaration, posted in public. Just something to make her smile as she heads off to work. But it also sounds like she woke up alone this morning.

Conclusion: Nothing beats subway love. If you have any stories of MTA romance, please let us know.

Missed Connections

What are people thinking on Missed Connections on Craigslist?

This ineffable encounter...a stranger shooting some furtive glances your way. We all dream of finding that person. But really, what are the chances? Zero, really.

Here are some noble attempts.

Let us know if you know of anyone who has met up with a stranger on the subway... or better yet, after the subway, from missed connections.

Girl on 1 subway with a budweiser bar glass in jacket pocket (116 st) - m4w - 25 (Upper West Side)

I was laughing at the glass. You saw me laugh at the glass and then you laughed. I got off at 116 and I watched you leave on the train as you watched me on the platform.

If you can describe what I was wearing and my hair color I would like to get coffee or tea...depends on my mood that day.

F TRAIN + FEDORAS + APPLE TV - w4m - w4m (BWAY/LAFAYETTE)

Saw you at the downtown F Broadway-Lafayette station two Saturdays ago, the 22nd. There was a guy playing saxophone while we waited for the train. You were wearing a peacoat over a leather jacket. You and I were both wearing fedoras. You were carrying a Apple TV in your hand which was funny because I had just bought one too. When we got on the train there was a little boy in a stroller between us. I got off at Delancey St.

F Train ~ 8:15 2/1 - m4w - 33 (East Village)

Hi,

Your cute ear muffs and jacket perfectly complimented your green eyes. The rest of you looked pretty great too. But the mischievous glint in your eyes and half smile made you memorable. Thanks for the great mental snapshot of a beautiful, fun stylish new york woman on such a nasty day outside. I hope Chelsea treats you well today.
